A Letter to St. John’s Parishioners from The Treasurer

Dear Parishioners of St. John’s,

I sincerely hope this letter finds you all well and safe.

I would like to take this time to briefly update you all on the finances of St John’s over the past few months.  I hardly need mention that the pandemic of this year was completely unexpected when we passed our 2020 budget at our Last Vestry Meeting.  We never envisioned having to close the Church for an extended period, nor having a significant drop in revenue from our two largest rental groups: Back-to-Basics Daycare and the Vancouver Light Church.

However, we were extremely fortunate to receive significant financial help from the Diocese and from some specific one-time donations to see us through the first few months.  I believe it was also important that since the very first week of our closure we have the recorded Sunday services and have kept in touch with our community in various ways including the weekly Telephone Ministry.  I would like to personally thank all who have worked hard to make these happen and make them a success.  I think it is also important to add that we have not have had to cut back or lay off any staff as many other churches in our Diocese have done.  Our staff are very much a part of our weekly broadcast recordings and our now in-person services.

We now find ourselves in the fall months and the financial aid from the Diocese is over.  I am happy to report that Back-to-Basics Daycare is paying its full monthly rent and the Vancouver Light Church is paying 75% of its rent.  However, I do have to report that our envelope givings are down by 10% from what we budgeted.  While there may be numerous reasons for this, it is of some concern to me.  While the Church is open on a semi-monthly basis for now, most of our expenses remain the same.

I would therefore kindly ask that you might prayerfully consider maintaining your monthly giving by either mailing or dropping off a cheque at the Church office or bringing your offering to the in-person services. I also humbly invite you to prayerfully consider increasing your giving if you are in a position and feel comfortable in so doing.  As always, I thank everyone for your incredible offerings of time, talent and treasure to St. John’s and its mission to our community and the world.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me or one of the Wardens or Patrick.  I thank you for taking the time to read this and I thank you in advance for your prayerful considerations.

Sincerely Yours, Bob Hardy,

Treasurer, St. John’s Anglican Church
